This past week has been filled with small fun waves. Looks like we are in for it later in the week assuming this storm holds true. I would love to get the chance to swim out in some big heavy surf. All the boys were out in the water today including Russel Spencer, the boys at Del Mar Housing Projects, and assorted friends from all over the county. Driving South pt. II

This past weekend, me and some of my friends snuck across the border for a good swell heading down the coast. Usually when you think of going to Mexico you think of camping and getting very dirty. This was not the case. We stayed in a house bigger than most houses in San Diego. When we headed home we all had forgotten we were in Mexico for the past few days, until we hit Tijuana. The waves were good on the trip, with the swell peaking on Sunday. We saw one wave come through at the point where you could literally stick a volkswagon bus inside the barrel.....gnarly. Hope to start making more trips down here as winter slowly approaches.

Been surfing my nut off and shooting lots of pictures. My crew finally showed up today and I migrated from a cardboard box to pretty much the Taj Mahal. Waves will be medium sized for the rest of the trip until the last two days when we should be getting a good swell. Stay tuned for updates cause the Taj Mahal has wireless throughout the entire area.

On a Whim

One morning, my roomate Cody asked Lauren and myself to go camp up in Mammoth Lakes over the holiday weekend. Less than two hours later we were off. I have only ever been to Mammoth in winter time, so going when there was no snow was an entirely different experience. We left San Diego where it was hovering around 102 and arrived in Mammoth at our camping spot where it was in the low 30's. We took our time on the drive stopping to check out the smoke from the LA fires as it floated across the desert and to walk around a 'ghost' town, which pretty much was just a bunch of old people playing checkers outside of their house. (which might be creepier than actual ghosts) It was good seeing old friends who live in Mammoth year round, I envy how nice of a town they have. Hopefully I can make it back up to the Sierras before the first snowfall, which is quickly approaching.

Fall is just around the corner

Fall is my favorite time of year by far. Even though Southern California doesn't have trees that change colors, our ocean and sky dictates the seasonal change. Morning offshore wind grooms the ocean, while the afternoon light makes the ocean glow. A lot of the time it stays glassy all day. I shot the following photos last week and they got me stoked for fall to say the least. enjoy.

Silly Monsters

We started paddline at 7 am and reached this break within two hours. Early in the morning it was kind of high tide and the clouds hadn't burned off yet. By the afternoon the sun was out and the tide was draining out to reveal 4-5 ft rights that peeled for over 100 yards. We surfed our brains out and by 6pm the tide had switched and it went completely flat. We were satisfied to say the least. We scored great waves by ourselves all day.

A Trip out East

I went out to Del Mar Housing Projects to get my long lens port dialed in for this weeks festivities in the ocean realm. While out there I skated around and shot some images around the shop. Big swell headed this weekend, hopefully not it delivers and we aren't all just hyping it up way too much.

The Lady with the Red Vail

She is one of the dead people who never left this earth. She stalks the night torturing the living who fear the dead. I can always feel her presence. Her laugh haunts my dreams. I wake up in a cold sweat to see her standing in my closet door. I close my eyes and try to ignore her but she creeps closer and closer until I can feel her cold breath on my face. I open my eyes and she is gone. She leaves my house in shambles like a bat out of hell. I have four days left at 1010 and I am glad I will be gone because I hate this woman.

After traveling for 48 hours to Indonesia and back without any problems, I have managed to obtain the swine flu in my own home. What are the odds? I'm not sure which is better about the swine flu, the fact that I had the most intense dreams where I was killing people in my parents house or that my throat has completely closed off and I can barely breathe. This was one of my favorite spots called Diablos. The wave was like a freaking 200 yard halfpipe it was amazing. Definitely pounded a few fatties out there.

So after 19 hours of travel I have arrived in Singapore. This place is insanely clean. I would probably eat my dinner off the bathroom floor while having violent diarrhea. No joke. One more flight to Padang and onto the boat. There should be waves the first week so expect some updates if I ever get a signal.

So for the past five years I have been pooping in the same bathroom between the same two rooms. Last week our landlord thought it would be a stellar idea to remodel it. My house is now covered in dust from a house that was made in 1928, and I am pretty sure it is going to give me tuberculous. Not to mention the thousands of dollars in equipment we have at our house.

I walk every morning to my other room mates bathrooms to drop the Cosbeys off at the pool only to be let down cause someone is already using the toilet. Only one kid could sympathize with my situation, and that is the poo kid. So here's to you poo kid, our jokes about pooping will never be the same again, good times my frend, good times...

Wow, it has been a long ass time since I have been on this thing. Let's see, my last post was in May. What has gone on since then? Graduated college with a B.A. in visual and performing arts from cal state university san marcos. I also had back surgery in July to repair to blown discs in my lumbar in my spine. I surfed for the first time in seven and a half months towards the end of September. I couldn't have been more stoked being back in the water. I also threw some money down on a water housing for my canon setup. It fits both my 35mm eos 1n as well as my mark II. The boys over at www.delmarhousingproject.com did a bitchin' job on the housing. Here are some sample pics from oside with my frend bob. I'l be back soon with some more photos, enjoy for now.

Indian Rock

This was a good trip to start out with. When I first arrived, I was slightly disappointed with how many people were in attendance. Usually when I am photographing landscapes I don't like anyone in my photos. I had to get over the feeling that I was going to share this spot with this many people and find a way to work around them and to incorporate them into my work. Once I started to get into a groove, shooting became pleasurable, and I sort of fed off the energy of the land and the people. Had I taken this approach the entire time I was there, I might have gotten some more bangers. Bangers is a word that I use to describe a good photograph. Anyways I hope you like my photographs, and I can't wait to get some inspiration from my fellow classmates.

This is where I want to take my photographic experience to. I have been researching a lot about photographers around the world who shoot what ultimately matters. Jame's photos are very familiar to me, I have seen his work and learned a lot from how he shoots. His images bring out emotions inside of yourself you didn't even know were there. Becoming a field photographer is something I would love to do. It is a very dangerous job, however I feel it is vital to show our ignorant world what needs to be addressed and taken care of. Some images that struck me the most were the two soldiers crying at their friends grave, as well as the images from Darfur and South Africa. How can we know what is really going on around the world if it weren't for the ones like James risking their lives to go out and shoot the real world. I would love to choose a topic after this semester, such as famine, and go around the world documenting it. Helping others is what life is all about, and if my photography can show someone how they can help, then I am doing my job. This work really inspires me and I will go out and do this type of work some day.

On the website blurb, I checked out many previews for fine art photography. I came across a bunch that were sub-par, but a few really caught my attention. The book Places and Faces by Ross Buchanan has some really colorful landscape photos in it. Ross has taken some really good reflection pictures. Other books I viewed were Being There by Justin Borucki. This was a collection of photographs from concerts and venues all having to do with music. The book showed images of bands such as Rancid, Lenny Kravitz, Sonic Youth, and Redman. Most of the work on this site seems pretty amateur, mostly just a lot of photos from family trips and what have you. You really have to search to find some good work. Other work that caught my eye included work by Mark Weverling.
